Mr Molokai breaks maiden in impressive fashion

One of the most impressive winners at Warrnambool this week was Mr Molokai who, having only his third start, raced away with the No Fuss Solutions Maiden Plate.

Always travelling well back in the field in the 1700m contest, the promising three-year-old worked around his rivals from before the turn and straightening looked to have plenty in the tank.

Quickly claiming the leaders, Mr Molokai drew clear over the final 100m - a bit green but able to win by a soft 3.3 lengths.

"From the half mile he felt like the winner," said jockey Glen Boss who is confident that the son of W.S Cox Plate winner Savabeel can measure up in better company.

"He has come out of two very strong maidens," he said - adding that at his previous outing at Cranbourne the horse felt as though "he was holding his breath."

"I advised Michael Moroney to add a tongue tie to his gear and he was breathing beautifully throughout the whole race today."

Stable representative David Grego - celebrating his birthday with a Warrnambool carnival winner - was very pleased.

"We thought he was going to break his maiden at his first start but he ran into Hearts And Arrows who is a decent horse."
Mr Molokai will now be tried in city class with a Caulfield 2000m event to prove a test to see where he is at with a possible trip to the Queensland carnival on the agenda.

A $100,000 Karaka yearling, Mr Molokai is raced by the Stayers Racing Syndicate managed by successful owner Rob McAnulty. He is out of the unraced Rhythm mare No Hula No Dance, a ¾ sister to the Gr.1 NZ 2000 Guineas winner Hulastrike. This is also the family of the American topliners Pleasant Tap and Go For Gin and the local Gr.1 winners Hula Chief and Racing To Win.
It was nearly a perfect day for the stable, our only other runner Absolutely Maybe beaten a mere head in the three-year-old handicap. Good luck to the connections of our Warrnambool runners on Thursday – Takeonefortheteam, Stormy Hussey and Lady Liz.
