Mr Baritone lines up in the Bletchingly

Stable favourite Mr Baritone kicks off another preparation at Caulfield this Saturday, due to take his place in the feature event, the $125,000 Gr.3 Bletchingly Stakes.

Having his first run since a good performance in the Stradbroke Handicap in June, the eight-year-old enjoyed a short break – Michael Moroney pointing out that the chestnut never needs long in the paddock.

“He is a burly type and he can put on too much weight if he is out too long,” he said.

Coming off similar form, Mr Baritone was a game third in this same race last year and Moroney is confident of a bold showing.

“The track looks like being dead to slow which is what he wants so he should prove competitive again.”

Drawn barrier eight with Mark Zahra to take the ride, Mr Baritone is having his 63rd start. He has been a great stalwart for the stable, winning eight races and amassing over $1.24 in stakes.

Earlier in the day we have the promising Lordoftheparrots lining up in the fourth even of the day, an 1800m handicap. Barrier six looks nice for him and Damien Oliver takes the ride.

“It will be interesting to see how he goes over this distance,” Moroney said – pointing out that the lightly raced three-year-old is stepping up from 1400m to 1800m at only his fourth start.

“He looks like that is what he wants,” he continued, adding that he is a big fan of the young horse.

“He is a nice horse to deal with,” he said, “quiet with a lovely nature.”

Another nice horse is the always reliable Abitofado who has his second run back from a short break in the fifth race, the Chisholm Institute Handicap.

A bold second fresh at Flemington a couple of weeks ago, the five-year-old was improved by the run and Moroney is confident that he will again run well.

“He is always competitive,” he said, “and he looks as well as I have ever seen him.”

A quiet day on Sunday with Steel Stilettos likely to be scratched after drawing a horror gate at Bendigo but at Echuca on Monday Dodge Tide lines up in a 1400m maiden.

Sent out favourite first up, the three-year-old son of Quest For Fame jumped a little too well from an inside gate, ending up “a reluctant leader.”

“He just ran out of condition the last bit and it was quite a good run,” said Moroney. “He ran about a bit but he has come on from the run and we have made a few gear changes – a tongue tie and a lugging bit.”

Good luck to the connections of our weekend’s runners!
