Bendigo Cup Day.

As Araldo continues to shape well for next Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup, Ballymore Stables have a busy week preparing for our annual Owners Day at the Flemington stables on Cup Eve.

And in the meantime we are taking a handy group of horses to Wednesday’s Bendigo Cup meeting – including Surpass (pictured) who contests the day’s $250,000 Listed feature.

Not in the right part of the track when unplaced over a shorter trip in the Moe Cup, Surpass is better suited over the 2400m of the Bendigo Cup and Michael Moroney is expecting a bold showing from the consistent galloper.

“Any rain about at all would help him but at the trip he can be effective on top of the ground – he gets away with a firmer track a bit more as he does stay so well.”

To be ridden by Chris Symons, Surpass has drawn nicely in barrier five.

Earlier in the day we will be cheering on Monsieur de Lago who resumes in the opening event, the Champions IGA Maiden Plate.

Unplaced at his debut in August, the son of Encosta de Lago has improved since being gelded and he is a horse the stable has always had time for.

“He is a very fast horse who we have always liked,” Moroney reported, “and he should not remain a maiden for long.”

In the following race, the Pura Milk Maiden Plate, we saddle up the well related debutant Margin Trader who was also recently gelded.

“He is a really nice staying type who was brought over from New Zealand with the Derby in mind – but after failing to fire in a jump-out Steve Arnold advised that he needed gelding.”

Given a bit of time, the son of Tavistock and a sister to Might And Power has, says Moroney “quite a bit of quality about him.”

“He is a real Zabeel to look at and whatever he shows this time in he will improve upon next year – but we are expecting him to run well.”

We also have a Warwick Farm runner on Wednesday, Habitual Offender lining up over 2200m in the Pro-Ride Handicap with James McDonald to ride.

“We have been really happy with him,” said Moroney.

“The ear muffs have come off as he is relaxing now and he is up to his right trip now.”
