Owner hits memorable 50 with Ballymore

David Trubshoe has fifty good reasons to celebrate his association with Mike and Paul Moroney.

He recently brought up his half-century of winners as an owner and all of them have been provided by the brothers.

“Forty-seven have come out of Ballymore Stables and the other three had a Ballymore connection through Paul,” Trubshoe said.

Paul Moroney purchased the Mozart mare Musical Magic in England and she has produced the Graham Richardson-trained winners Dubai Shuffle and Tiara Concerto, who were bred by Garry Christini.

“Garry’s my partner in most of the horses and usually what he doesn’t sell we race,” Trubshoe said.

“I got an e-mail from Paul, who is in France, with his congratulations.”

His milestone winner was the St Reims filly Fairy Cake, who was successful at Matamata for Moroney and his training partner Chad Ormsby.

“My first winner was I Robot in December, 2007 and he was a good horse and Michael Coleman rode him and he was also on my 50th winner,” Trubshoe said. “I’ve had a long association with Michael, a top man and a top rider.

“We had a good filly with Mike in Australia called Octavia, who won a Group Three and a Listed race and she’s recently been retired.

“The best in New Zealand would have been Captain Fantastic, who won the Wakefield the day Fully Fledged jumped the rail, a bit fortuitous for us. Crown Of Thorns was another very good bread and butter horse.

“Savvy Dancer won us a Feilding Cup and he’s back now after breaking down on the eve of the last Melbourne Cup.

“We’re also hoping to have some fun with Dubai Shuffle this preparation and my wife Delwyn has got a share in Divissima, who will kick off soon and then maybe the Gold Trail and the 1000 Guineas.”

Trubshoe has a lengthy involvement with racing after cutting his teeth at Awapuni with the late Eric Temperton.

“I started with him in the late 60s, I was working but took every chance to be at the stables and I used to take the horses to the races every Saturday,’ he said. “I was with Eric for seven years.

“I’ve made a lot of good friends through the industry and it’s also been great for our family – nothing beats the thrill of the kill when you win.”
