Singing A Winning Song

Nobody missed the eye-catching debut performance of Yesterday’s Songs at Bendigo a couple of weeks ago and it was not surprising to see him sent out a hot favourite at Sandown on Wednesday.

Charging home for third off a slow start at debut, the son of Henrythenavigator jumped much better this time, settling nicely in sixth position for Michael Rodd.

Rodd had plenty of horse underneath him coming to the turn and there was no holding back as Yesterday’s Songs dashed quickly to the lead with 300m to go.

And away he went – with each stride getting further in front; his winning margin a soft and impressive 5½ lengths.

“It was over before we straightened up,” Rodd enthused – “I couldn’t believe the turn of foot he’s got.”

“He’s not an overly big horse and he’s still a bit on the immature side – you could see when he got there he wanted to lay in and roll around a bit – but I just like the turn of foot that he showed.”

Michael Moroney said that Yesterday’s Songs, a horse who has battled shin-soreness, has long been well regarded.

“He has been quite slow maturing but he has always shown a lot.”

Spring is a temptation for the promising young horse but for now Moroney is happy to push on whilst the gelding is well and in form.

“With all the problems we’ve had with him, I think we’ll keep going while he’s still going all right,” he said.

“He could be a nice horse to race through his grades.”

Paul Moroney, who purchased Yesterday’s Songs for the stable at the 2012 Karaka Premier rated the NZ$160,000 purchase “my number one selection at the sale.”

“I also bought his high class dam Sarah Vee as a yearling and it looks like her boy has inherited similar ability.”

A Group One placed Listed winner, Sarah Vee is also dam of the stakes placed Rahveel.

Congratulations to Yesterday’s Songs’ happy owners Ballymore Stables (Aust) Pty Ltd, R & C Legh Racing Pty Ltd (manager Rupert Legh), Anne Bergin, Gay & Neale Donnelley and Bernadette & Ian Laughton.
