Promising Matamata mare The Last Shower put herself into contention for higher honours in the coming month with a game win in the last race of Ellerslie’s Auckland Cup Week Carnival on Saturday.

Having cost herself a win at the same venue three weeks earlier through shifting outwards in the last 100 metres of her race that day, the Mike Moroney and Chad Ormsby trained mare managed to overcome the urge to do something similar on Saturday to grab a narrow victory.

“I’ve always had a big opinion of her and she looks as though she might be ready to fulfill the promise she has shown us at home,” said Ormsby.

“We thought enough of her to take her to Brisbane as a three-year-old but nothing went right over there so we brought her home and gave her a good spell.

“She came back in enormous fashion when she monstered them first up at Tauranga but had another setback after a hard run behind Chintz at her next start so we have been playing catch-up a fair bit since then.

“We thought she would win last time but threw it away and she tried to do it again this time, but even though the margin was a nose, I was confident she was the winner.”

Ormsby is now contemplating a start in the Gr. 1 Easter Handicap on the 12th of April for the mare although she may need another win before then to guarantee a start in the race.

Ormsby also reported that stablemate The Fire Inside would take her place in this weekend’s Gr. 1 Wellfield New Zealand Oaks despite an unplaced run in the recent New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie.

“She was a real victim of circumstances in the Derby as she got caught wide without cover and nearly hit the deck in the straight when she was caught up in the skirmish on the home corner,” he said.

“She has come through the race in good shape and she is a big strong filly who will get the distance so we will press on with her to the Oaks.”
