Group One performer Le Choix looking good

Recent signs have been encouraging for a successful return to racing from the former top three-year-old Le Choix.

He stamped himself as an outstanding prospect last season after winning his first two starts and then running second to Southern Lord in the Gr.1 Levin Classic before he was laid low by an injury.
“It was really unfortunate and a bit of bone broke off in his hock after that,” co-trainer Chad Ormsby said. “We were getting him ready for the Derby and his ability is untapped.”''

Le Choix was given an extended spell and after a long, slow build-up he will return to competition in the Rating 85 New Zealand Herald 1400 at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Champion rider Opie Bosson has been booked for the ride.

“His trial at Cambridge was good in an open heat and it’s pleasing to see him coming back,” Ormsby said.

“I really think he’ll run well and it’s a strong, competitive field and he’s up against it a bit, but as long as he does some good work and comes through it well then we’ll be happy.”

Ormsby and training partner Michael Moroney also have a strong hand in the Gr.2 Cambridge Stud Eight Carat Classic with Stella’s Honour, who is part-owned by the race sponsor, and Total Response engaged.

Stella’s Honour was a last-start second behind race rival Procurement and Ormsby said there was a strong case for that result to have been reversed.

“Switch the draws and Stella might have beaten her home. She’s got just as much talent as anything in the field and it’s just a matter of getting the right run and she’s a real live chance.”

Total Response has beaten the older horses at her last two appearances and is ready for her chance at black type. “She’s a classy filly who’s looking for more ground and all going well she’ll come through this and then on to the Royal Stakes,” Ormsby said. – NZ Racing Desk.
