Te Karaka Impresses

Lightly raced six-year-old Te Karaka looks set for a good campaign after an impressive first up victory at Geelong on Tuesday.

Having his first run since mid-January, the bay looked to have plenty in hand racing away to a soft 2¼ victory over 1300m.

Travelling nicely off pace for Jason Lyon, Te Karaka joined in at the 200m - taking a clear lead at the 100m and racing away.

A three times winner from just 11 starts, Te Karaka is at his best over longer trips but he does, says Michael Moroney, "have a bit of speed for a High Chaparral."

"He does stay so a win first up was a good start for his preparation," he said, adding that the gelding had tendon issues before joining Ballymore.

Raced by Robert Rice, Geoffrey Tucker, Alick & Vivian Rogers, Justin Stead, Paul Walker, Rodney Johnston, Connie Triantos, the Wiffem Syndicate (manager Peter Mottram), Jocelyn Cooke, the Love Racing Syndicate, Tony McGrath and Shawn Gillespie, Te Karaka is a grandson of the Group One New Zealand 1000 Guineas heroine Olga's Pal.

His sire High Chaparral (pictured) is one of our favourites - also being sire of our dual Group One winner Monaco Consul.

Hopefully our winning form can continue at Werribee on Wednesday where we saddle up just the one runner - Donna Marie in the Werribee Racing Club Members Maiden Plate over 2200m.

Catching the eye when finishing off strongly over a mile at her recent Australian debut, the daughter of Don Eduardo is suited by the rise in distance.

"She has trained on well," Moroney said, adding that the four-year-old has soft track form in New Zealand.
