A Major win

"A nice staying horse in the making" is how Michael Moroney describes the promising Major Coup who raced away to an impressive victory at Kyneton last Wednesday.

Stepping up to 1850m at his third run this preparation, the lightly raced son of W.S Cox Plate winner Savabeel (pictured) looked good putting 2 1/2 lengths on some handy types.

A two times winner from just six starts, Major Coup has been a slow maturer and despite the ease of his victory again looks ready for a break.

"He has lost a bit of condition," Moroney said, adding that the spring "is a good time of year for horses to go out."

"They do so well - they can have a month off and look like they have had longer."

Getting back for Michale Walker who was riding him for the first time, Major Coup swung wide at the turn before charging home.

"He is a horse who needs to find his rhythm," Walker noted, "and they went out hard for him... he was quite impressive."

Raced by Giuseppe Del Mastro, Gerard Van Ameyden, Geoffrey Sharp, Andrew Dale, Versace Racing, McGrath Racing, Puzzle Racing, RBA Racing and the Pink & Frikkers & Ironbar Syndicates, Major Coup is out of the Gr.3 winning Entrepreneur mare Justine Coup whose first two to race – Justine's Pride and Sav's Diva (a full sister to Major Coup) have both been winners.

The winner of seven races, Justine Coup is a half sister to the stakes placed Coup Hogan and the city winner Love Song out of a daughter of the terrific racemare Royal Regatta – winner of eight races including the Australasian Oaks, the Wakeful Stakes and the Surround Stakes.

Other stakes winners from this family include Mushtak, Round The World, The Perfume Garden, Love In a Mist and Bayshore.
