ELKINGTON ROAD ANOTHER IMPRESSIVE DEBUTANT FOR BALLYMORE STABLES

Elkington Road maintained the winning start to the season for Ballymore Stables win an impressive debut win at Sandown today.

Following on from Japanese Emperor at this meeting last Wednesday and Emissary’s win at Listed level at Caulfield on Saturday, Elkington Road showed an impressive turn of foot in the home straight to race to a two and a quarter length win in the Ladbroke It! Plate (1200m) for three-year-old maidens.

Assistant trainer Glen Thompson said afterwards that despite not knowing how the son of All Too Hard would handle the heavy (10) conditions, the stable was expecting a strong showing.

"Michael (Moroney) was confident heading into the race with him today, obviously on a Heavy (10) you don't really know what you are going to get until you see them produce on it," Thompson said.

"It was good to see him get the result. And it might flatter him a bit, now you don't know how he'll go back on a Good track, so going forward we don't really know where he sits, but all you can do is win.”

Jamie Mott also rode Japanese Emperor to victory last week and said the pair both possessed all important acceleration.

"Both horses have shown a great turn of foot, I'm not sure where they'll probably end up, but it's a good time of year to have a couple of first starters show a turn of foot like that," Mott said.

"He (Elkington Road) began quickly, a little too quick as he wanted to half run through the bridle and I was mindful that I wanted to let the speed go.

"They didn't go a hectic speed at all but in giving them that chance to let them go, and get into a good rhythm, I was able to travel well into the straight and I had a look around and everything was under pressure and I was cantering.

"He is just very raw, he didn't know what was going on at all, which is probably more exciting than anything.

"He didn't know what was going on and he was still able to put them away and showed a super turn of foot.

"I wouldn't pick one yet, it's too early.”

Elkington Road, was purchased by Paul and Michael Moroney for $240,000 from last year's Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.
