Ballymore welcomes Matt Hoysted as new Assistant Trainer

As his famous name indicates, Matt Hoysted was born around horses and was born to work with them.

And he has done so with a passion for as long as he can remember , firstly with his father Greg and then for 12 or so months with the late Roger Hoysted – one of Wangaratta’s most respected trainers.

“I learned a lot from dad and Roger,” Matt said, appreciating the lessons learned from talented horsemen.

Joining the Lloyd Williams team at Macedon Lodge for four years, Matt built upon his knowledge and it was only a matter of time – with his mum Ronda already a member of the Ballymore team (and his dad soon to follow)– that he end up at our Flemington stables.

Which is where he has been for just over two years, recently promoted to the role of assistant trainer – a role he is relishing.

“It is a great opportunity,” he said, adding that he has enjoyed the experience of working not only with a leading trainer but with great fellow staff and classy horses.

And Michael Moroney is very pleased to have Matt aboard.

“I knew from the moment he walked into the stables that he was the right sort of person for a role with responsibility,” he said.

“We have always had a policy of supporting young people and of promoting from within,” he said, adding that he gained his own start in such a way.

“I started working for Champion NZ Trainer Dave O’Sullivan at the age of 16 before being promoted to foreman at 17 and he made me partner when I was only 21.”

“Matt is young but he proved to be a great right hand man for Claire Rayner (Ballymore’s former Assistant Trainer who had done such a great job over the past eight years) and I was pleased when she suggested that he would be the right person to fill her position.”
