Sabrage charges towards Derby

Ballymore looks on track for another VRC Derby success with promising colt Sabrage striking form at just the right time, impressive taking out Saturday's $125,000 Gr.3 Norman Robinson Stakes.

Settling well just better than mid-field the good looking three-year-old - who had been one of the stand-outs in the mounting yard - was always travelling well for Damien Oliver but did run into a bit of trouble turning.

"We got bounced around a bit," Oliver said, "so he did a really good job. He ran out the 2000m strongly - the extra 500m of the Derby is tough but he's as good a chance as any."

Sabrage's middle distance prowess has surprised the stable a bit, as a son of sprinter Charge Forward he was expected to be more of a Caulfield Guineas type than a Derby prospect.

"We thought he'd struggle at a distnace but he has certainly got a stayer's action," Michael Moroney said, adding that Sabrage's physical maturity is helping him along.

"He is a more mature type than Monaco Consul (the stable's 2009 VRC Derby winner) - probably more like Second Coming (successful in 1997) - a tough colt."

Part owner Rupert Legh was all smiles, hoping he can repeat a Derby success enjoyed in 1986 with Raveneaux who was third in the Norman Robinson that yea. Congratulations to him and Sabrage's other connections - Ballymore Stables, Cheryl Legh Racing, Lorne Bloodstock, Michael & Jennifer Krauser and Peter & Julienne & Stephen Kay.

Ballymore NZ also had a good day, five-year-old mare Shahbab increasing her value with a Listed placing in the Lion Red Plate at Arawa Park.
