Surface Tension races away

Much happier on firmer going, imported galloper Surface Tension raced away to an easy victory at Ballarat on Wednesday.

Having only his second local start, the lightly raced and promising five-year-old was always travelling well on pace for Lisa Cropp and from the 200m pulled clear.

Successful by a soft 1.8 lengths, the son of Galileo (pictured) impressed Cropp – “he is a train!” she enthused, “he just keeps running!”

A horse who still has plenty of scope for improvement – Cropp noting that “he is still a big baby with a lot to learn,” Surface Tension raced just three times for Luca Cumani in the UK and he too described the bay as a “big baby.”

Purchased by Paul Moroney for just 28,000 guineas at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale, Surface Tension was part of a good week for Galileo who only days earlier was represented by his 100th individual stakes winner.

Surface Tension’s win at big odds was no surprise to the stable – “we really liked his chances first up,” Michael said, “but he just wasn’t happy on the heavy going. He really turned things around today.”

Aimed at a couple of country showcases coming up, Surface Tension is a well bred horse, a son of the Listed winning Gulch mare Miss Moses from the family of the successful stallion Be My Guest.

Congratulations to owners, the Brew 1, Brew 2, Pulse, Jacks, Vincitori, Quantum & HH Syndicates, Christopher Lynch and Peter Walker.

Hopefully the stable’s good form can continue at Seymour on Thursday where we saddle up three nice horses kicking off with Noble Earl in the second event, a 1009m maiden.

“He is quite a fast horse,” Moroney said, “but he has been pretty green and he has taken a fair bit of teaching.”

“He can be a bit hyperactive but if he is on his best behaviour he should run well.”

Reset filly Kenamon Belle makes her debut in the 1109m maiden as is also expected to run well – “she is one of our better fillies,” Moroney enthused, “we really like her.”

He also has plenty of time for The Deep South who contests the 1309m maiden having run an encouraging second at debut in mid-June.

“He is one of our Derby horses and he went really well at his first start. He has come back stronger and we are very happy with him – he should prove competitive.”
