WINNING DEBUT FOR CHAWINDA

Chawinda delivered a performance full of promise to win on debut at Cranbourne on Friday nigh.

Breaking smartly to hold the inside and lead, Chawinda was pressed on her outside by Jeehaan before the home turn and looked under pressure however, the daughter of Zoustar found plenty for Jordan Childs and in a duel to the line still held a narrow margin over the favourite at the finish.

Mike Moroney admitted the win was something a pleasant surprise as Chawinda has a mind of her own and he was unsure what to expect.

“It was a pleasant surprise as she can be a bit of a madam at home but it’s a mental thing and she applied her toughness in the right way tonight,” Moroney said.

“I thought it was a really tough win and I want to work with her now and keep her mind right which means I might not push on too far this preparation.


“She’s definitely got some talent though and it’s terrific to start with a win so we will see how she feels in the next couple of days and then make a plan from there.”

Chawinda sold for $240,000 to Paul Moroney as a Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling from the Widden Stud draft.
