A successful Sunday - two easy winners

It was a great battle in the run home for up-and-comer Chabrier at Cranbourne on Sunday, the two-year-old at only his second start having to dig deep after engaging in a two horse war all the way down the straight.

Getting the upper hand over the final stages and drawing clear to win by half a length for an in-form Lisa Cropp, the promising son of first season sire Strada impressed his rider.

“He is very much a competitor,” she said. “He pins his ears back and knows where the line is.”

Still a bit green, Chabrier has, says Cropp, plenty of scope – “he will improve a tonne on that,” she said – “he is still learning and he will get more ground for sure.”

Named after a famous French composer, Chabrier is looking a good buy at $21,000 – catching Paul Moroney’s eye at the Classic Sale.

Raced by Ballymore Stables, Adam & Brian Hudson, Anthony Fitzgibbon, The Fat Belly Martin Racing & Twoeasy Syndicates, he is out of the metropolitan winning mare Aubade, half sister to the city winners Lodgent, My Point and Crown Seal. Tough stakes winners Mooball and God Has Spoken hail from this family.

And it was a winning interstate double for the stable, later in the day As You Like It most impressive racing away to a soft 4.5 length victory in the 1400m maiden at the Sunshine Coast.

A $45,000 weanling purchase by globe-trotting Gr.1 sprinter Falvelon, As You Like It was having only his second start and he certainly looks the type to measure up in stronger company.

Raced by GKV Holdings & Michael Head, he is out of the placed Danehill Dancer mare Vidance whose grandam is the Golden Slipper heroine Vivarchi – grandam of the marvellous Singapore Gr.1 campaigner Waikato.
