WINNING CHANCES AT SANDOWN ON SUNDAY

Meteor Light, Hurricane Fighter and Seminoles are our representatives on the Lakeside course on Sunday.

Meteor Light (pictured) is the first to go in race four, the Benchmark 78 Handicap over 2400m. The import scored over 2400m on the Lakeside two starts back on a heavy track and Mike Moroney is confident of a strong showing today.

“We’ve used Michael Poy’s claim to help him and to be honest we’re happy he’s drawn the outside,” Moroney said.

“He can be a bit slow into stride and from inside draws he can get crossed early so from the outside he can have a clear run at them getting across.

“The horse is extremely fit and if he gets an unchallenged lead I think he will be hard to beat.”

Hurricane Fighter runs in race eight, the Benchmark 64 Handicap over 1300m and jumping from barrier nine under Michael Poy.

It is the second run this preparation for Hurricane Fighter which finished well for third over 1112m at Geelong last month when resuming.

“We decided to take him out of the race at the Valley yesterday due to the barrier and he’s wide again today but it looks a slightly easier race,” Moroney said.

“We’ve claimed to help him with weight and the track should suit him.

“He’s come on a lot for the first-up run and if you go on his work then he’s certainly in good form.

“He’s going to need a little bit of luck from the barrier but if he can get some cover early and then get a clear crack at them in the straight then I do think he will be hard to beat.”

Seminoles runs in the last race, the Benchmark 64 Handicap over 2100m and can improve on the drier surface.

“He raced on speed last start at Cranbourne in what was a pretty strong benchmark race,” Moroney said.

“His three runs this time in have been on rain affected ground and I’m expecting him to improve today on a firmer surface. He’s certainly fitter now, Damien Thornton is riding in good form so barring bad luck we don’t have any excuses.”
