GUINEAS GLORY UP FOR GRABS ON SATURDAY

Four runners for us on Australian Guineas day at Flemington on Saturday including Alabama Express in the feature race.

Alabama Express (pictured) runs in the Group 1 Australian Guineas over 1600m with Michael Dee again in the saddle and drawn barrier six.

The handsome son of Redoute’s Choice won last time out against older horses in the Group 1 C F Orr Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield and has pleased Mike Moroney since.

“The draw could be awkward but I’m really happy with him,” Moroney said. “His last piece of work was terrific and tells me he’s trained on.

“I can’t fault him, he’ll just need a bit of luck from the draw but the first furlong will make or break us. If he can get a trouble free run then I’m expecting our horses to be hard to beat, especially if he can get a strong mile.”

Des Moines starts the day for us in race one, the benchmark 84 handicap for mares over the straight 1100m with Michael Dee to ride.

The four-year-old is first-up since finishing fifth behind Gytrash and Halvorsen over 1000m at Flemington last June.

“She’s had a long layoff but I’m very pleased with the way she has come on,” Moroney said.

“She’s a lovely big mare and her head is a lot better this time in, she’s relaxed in her work and if she brings her form from her jumpouts I’m expecting her to run extremely well.”

Vengeur Masque is in race two, the Roy Higgins Quality over 2600m with Damien Oliver in the saddle.

“His work has improved and I’m happy with him,” Moroney said. “It is a step up in trip for him and he is coming in off a long break but he’s the best horse in the race and if he’s fit enough I’m sure he’ll run well.”

Chicago Cub runs for the ninth time this preparation and won last time out at Flemington over 1200m on February 9.

“He’s not a difficult horse to ride so we’ve claimed on him to help him,” Moroney said.

“He’s deep into a preparation and he’s holding his condition well. He’s eaten up since his gallop in Tuesday and although he’s up in class he’s down in weight.”
