A GROUP I SATURDAY FOR US

Group 1 runners for us today with Mr Marathon Man in Sydney and Sound at home at Flemington.

Hawker Hurricane gets our day started in race three at Flemington, the Listed Poseidon Stakes over 1100m with Jordan Childs riding from barrier three.

Mike Moroney has an eye on the weather forecast with the son of Deep Field.

“There’s a lovely looking race for him in Sydney next Saturday and the forecast is for rain most of the week in Sydney so we might elect to wait for that race,” Moroney said.

“That said, I’m happy with the horse, he worked nicely on Tuesday and I’m expecting the track at Flemington to still be in the good (4) range early in the day.”

Sound runs in race seven, the Group I Turnbull Stakes over 2000m with James Winks riding from barrier seven.

It is the second start this preparation for the import who ran much better then his finishing position of 14th in the Makybe Diva Stakes first-up suggests.

“This race will tighten him up for the Caulfield Cup I’d say,” Moroney said. “The 2000m is probably short of his best and he’s better on a softer track so he doesn’t have a lot in his favour.

“He’s done well since his last race and I’m happy with him, his work on Tuesday was good and he is well suited by the weights and this is a good race for him to build towards the Cups.”

Mr Marathon Man (pictured) runs in race seven at Randwick, the Group I Epsom Handicap over 1600m with just 51kg on his back and Dean Holland in the saddle.

“I think the weight drop will make a difference - he’s been used to running in weight-for-age races and he drops considerably for this,” Moroney said.

“He wasn’t far away last start and has come through that well, he looks terrific and worked nicely on Tuesday.

“If they do get the predicted rain at Randwick it will help him for sure and if he can get a bit of luck from the barrier (nine) with a truly run race then I do think he can run a big race.”
