McEvoy and Moroney aim to go one better

Sydney jockey Kerrin McEvoy believes he can continue his good record over 3200m aboard Mike Moroney-trained stayers in Saturday's Group I Schweppes Sydney Cup at Randwick.

In the last two runnings of the Sydney Cup, McEvoy has had to settle for second aboard the Moroney-trained Divine Rebel when finishing behind Ista Kareem (2009) and Jessicabeel (2010).

McEvoy famously won the 2000 Melbourne Cup for Moroney when steering Brew to victory, a win that catapulted him to international stardom.

On Saturday McEvoy rides Tinseltown for Moroney and, despite being $51 in current markets, the top jockey was happy with the son of Pentire's last run in the Chairman's Handicap at Randwick and suggested he should have finished closer.

"It was a good run the other day he got knocked over on the corner,” McEvoy said.

"The two miles will suit and he's a nice chance at big odds.”

Moroney agreed with McEvoy's assessment of Tinseltown and hinted a soft track would further enhance his chances.

"He was a bit unlucky in the Chairman's, he tracked up nicely into the race but there was a bit of backwash and he seemed to cop most of it,” Moroney said.

"I'm pretty sure he'll run the two miles he just needs a bit of give in the ground which it looks like he'll get.”

Tinseltown's record over the two miles journey does not appear flash on paper with four starts for no placings.

However three of his four 3200m runs have been on firm tracks with his only other coming on a dead track in this year'sAuckland Cup where he settled back in a slowly run race.

With several horses set to push for the lead in Saturday's race, Tinseltown should get the pace to suit and the opportunity to prove his credentials over the gruelling trip.
