Ballymore Stables is excited to announce that the high-class German stayer Sound Check will run for the team in the 2018 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups following his private purchase.

A five-year-old entire, Sound Check won the Group II Oleander Rennen over 3200m at Hoppegarten in May and at his last start finished a neck behind Best Solution in the Group I Grosser Preis Von Berlin (2400m) at Hoppegarten on August 12.

Bloodstock consultant Paul Moroney had been tracking Sound Check through this year and Mike Moroney is delighted he was able to broker a deal to purchase the son of Lando, the sire of Melbourne Cup runner-up Heartbreak City.

“He’s exactly the sort of horse we’ve been looking for but his owners also bred the horse and were not that keen to sell him,” Moroney said.

“Fortunately for us we’ve been able to get the deal done and he’s an exciting horse for sure.

“The form out of his last start got another boost on Sunday when Best Solution won another Group I and in that horses Group win at Newmarket he had the subsequent Ebor winner beaten behind.

“He’s proven on all sorts of ground and he’s a seasoned older horse so he should have plenty of options here apart from this spring.

"He can run around for $30 million over the next 18 months or so with a couple of tries at the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup, BMWs, Sydney Cups and similar races."

Moroney confirmed Sound Check will race in the purple and white colours of Gerard Peterson.

“We’ve trained Group I winners for Gerard and he and Rod Duke are the majority owners along with established stable clients,” Moroney said.

“I’m hoping it’s a lucky omen as we made room for Gerard to be involved in Brew when we bought him for the Melbourne Cup.

“The intention is for Sound Check to run in the Caulfield Cup, he’s scheduled to arrive here on Grand Final day so we do not have long to wait.”
