BACK-TO-BACK WINS FOR RUBY ARMANI

Stakes quality mare Ruby Armani (5 m Makfi – Trujillo, by Saint Ballado) made it back-to-back wins with victory in the $35,000 Swiss Deli Rating 85 1400 metres on 14 January at Ellerslie.

Back in the winning groove with a polished performance in the Rating 70 1400 metres on 15 December at Tauranga, Ruby Armani had missed out on racing in the Rating 75 1600 metres given the abandonment of the last race on 1 January at Ellerslie, and co-trainer Pam Gerard had her in fine shape for the assignment.

“It was a bit of shock to see her lead, but she put in which was a good thing,” said Kylie Bax. “It was a really good win. Pam was pretty confident. She had been doing good track work and keeping going and the owners (B.A.X No. 2 Syndicate) are thrilled.”

Caught on a limb, jockey Jake Bayliss made a decision to lead heading to the 1000 metres. Ruby Armani relaxed in front, quickened when asked at the 200m and found again when sternly challenged over the concluding stages.

“She jumped well, nothing else wanted to go and soon as I got there (lead) she got a good breather,” Bayliss said. “I clicked her up through the gears at the 600m, she had a good look around, I pulled the whip through to the left (hand) and she stuck her big nose out.”

On Good3 footing, Ruby Armani ran the 1400 metres in 1:24.4, last 600m in 34.0, and her best return was $5.90 & $2.20 on the NZ TAB tote.

Gerard said: “She has done extremely well since winning and had to run. We were looking at different options, but coming here and winning could give her a chance in the Westbury Classic (Gr. 2, 1400m) on Karaka Million night.

“She’s been on fire in training and had to be my best bet of the weekend.”

“She’s tough and she seems to like the 1400 metres,” Bax added. “She’s a bigger and stronger mare this time in. Fillies and mares can go through a weak stage, until they develop, and when I handed her over to Pam after doing the pre-training I thought it would be her time.

“Pam does a great job of training and looking after her and she (Ruby Armani) loves her.

“It’s a lovely family. We bred her at Blandford (Lodge) and it’s good to have this result with the (yearling) sales coming up at Karaka. It’s exciting and Jake (Bayliss) is getting on well with her.”

Ruby Armani was strapped by Scott Magee.
