Consul like Better Loosen Up - Williams

Champion Melbourne jockey Craig Williams has compared Monaco Consul’s trackwork habits to the great galloper Better Loosen Up ahead of Saturday’s Group II Liston Stakes at Caulfield.
Williams said he has been aboard the Victoria Derby winner in his work and a jumpout in recent weeks but Monaco Consul has hidden his ability behind laziness in a similar vein to the 1990 Japan Cup winner.
“If anyone rode him in work and trialled him, you wouldn’t think much of him at all,” Williams said. “He gives you no feel at all.
“But, on the track, his form is super. Better Loosen Up couldn’t win a gallop either. I’m not saying he’s in Better Loosen Up’s class but he (Monaco Consul) does not give you any feel of a Group horse at all.
“He saves it all for raceday. It will be interesting for me riding him and comparing him under race day conditions.”
Williams and Monaco Consul will combine for the first time in a race in Saturday’s event after Jay Ford and Corey Brown steered the son of High Chaparral to his Group I wins in the Spring Champion Stakes and the Victoria Derby respectively.
Meanwhile, Williams said he is keen to renew his association with the lightly raced mare Response in the Group III Cockram Stakes (1200m).
Williams rode the Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained mare to a win in the Group III Matron Stakes at Flemington in March before the daughter of Charge Forward found Typhoon Tracy too tough in the Group I Queen Of The Turf Stakes in Sydney.
“I have ridden her in two trials and I am really happy with her,” Williams said. “She’s come through her break really well.
“She handles the soft ground and I would be happy if it rained for her. The track was rated dead at her first start but it was a heavy at Ballarat and she walked over it.
“I like what she has done and she didn’t lose me when she went to Sydney. She raised my expectations of what she can do with her performance in Sydney.
“She’s certainly good enough to win on Saturday with the right amount of luck.”
TAB Sportsbet has Monaco Consul as a $16 chance to win the Liston Stakes while Response is at $9 to win her second race at Group III level.
