POTEMKIN BIDS FOR HAT TRICK ON SUNDAY

Potemkin bids for a hat trick at Geelong on Sunday where Ballymore Stables has four runners.

Potemkin (pictured) is in race five, the Benchmark64 Handicap over 1726m and Lachlan King rides to utilise his two kilogram claim and reduce the weight to 58kg

Having won his past two starts at Echuca racing on speed Mike Moroney is expecting a similar pattern on Sunday.

“He’s drawn beautifully in barrier two and he’s not a hard horse to ride,” Moroney said.

“He’s come through the little foot hiccup he had and trained on well.

“The track will be soft which suits and he looks a winning chance again.”

The soft track might not be to the advantage of The Delphi who runs in the third race, the 3YO Maiden over 1421m and to be ridden by Patrick Moloney.

“As long as it stays soft then we’re willing to run but if the rain arrived I wouldn’t want to risk him on a heavy track,” Moroney said.

“He’s trained on well, he’s not the flashest of track workers but he looks terrific and if he shows his true form then I feel he can be hard to beat.”

Shadow Fighter tackles the eighth race, the Benchmark70 Handicap over 1121m and Moroney is happy with the physical progress he has made.

“He’s eating a lot better now and that has helped him condition wise,” Moroney said. “He’s starting to come in the coat and looks a lot better.

“His two jumpouts leading into this have been good and he’s got a good level of fitness but if there was rain and the track went heavy we might wait for another day.

“That said if it remains soft or better then I’d expect him to be competitive.”

Trendsetter runs in the sixth race, the Benchmark78 Handicap over 1726m and Moroney is very happy with the progress he has made since his first start after a long layoff.

“He’s still a bit of the fresh side but he’s trained on really well and I think the only query is drawing barrier one if we did get rain,” Moroney said.

“I’m really happy with and he’s in good order so it will not surprise me if he runs a big race at good odds.”
