Savile Row Gallant in Group 1 Defeat

Exciting three-year-old colt Savile Row (pictured) certainly didn’t let his supporters down when he managed to produce an eye catching run in the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Riccarton over the weekend.

Running 1.25 lengths second behind favoured gelding Ugo Foscolo, Savile Row travelled just worse than midfield throughout, from his wide gate, before unleashing a very strong turn of foot that saw him come within a length of the eventual winner.

Savile Row is by successful sire Makfi and will now head out for a short spell before Mike Moroney and Pam Gerard look to bring him back in with the intention of planning a Derby preparation for him.

“We were very proud of his performance,” co-trainer Pam Gerard said.
“He’s still a bit of a baby and has plenty to learn, but we’re looking forward to next year as we aim towards the Derby.”

The team have three runners in at Waipa tomorrow, although with the significant amount of rain received overnight, bringing the track back to a slow8, Wonder Woman and Press My Buttons are unlikely starters.

Carrying the colours of Vermair Racing, Like A Like will be making her debut in the Maiden event over 1150m with senior jockey Michael McNab to ride.

“She’ll take plenty of improvement for the outing, being her first time to the races, but she has trialed here and knows the track,” Gerard said.

“It will be quite tricky from the draw, but she has shown us a little speed, so hopefully with a bit of luck in running she can run a credible race.”
