Ballymore Claim Home Track Winning Double

The team celebrated a winning double, book-ending the race card, at yesterday’s Matamata twilight meeting with three-year-old’s All Knitted Up and Starstripe (pictured).

All Knitted Up had produced a couple of tidy lead up efforts and clearly took plenty of improvement from his first time over 2000m at his last outing at Te Aroha.

“We’ve always had time for this horse and it’s just taken a while to get build his fitness levels up, he just does so well,’ co-trainer Chad Ormsby said.

“It was a great performance, he got absolutely smashed from the gates and ended up last. Full credit to Sam (Spratt) for taking the initiative and moving forward when the pace slackened. It was the winning of the race.”

All Knitted Up was ridden by Sam Spratt and carries the colours of prominent breeder/owner Kevin Hickman and appears to be a promising stayer in the making. The son of Mastercraftsman is bred to run out a trip and holds a nomination for the 2016 New Zealand Derby over 2400m.

Starstripe proved too strong for her rivals when taking out the Rating 65 event for fillies and mares – the last event on the card – and in the process has stamped her ticket to the Group 2 Royal Stakes over 2000m at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day.

“She was a class above that field and it was great to see her do it in style,” Ormsby said.

“It was great to see her settle behind midfield, she’s shown she is a tractable filly that can be ridden anywhere. Not to mention she was three deep without cover throughout.”

Starstripe is raced by Dame Sian Elias and Hugh Fletcher, and was purchased at the 2014 Karaka Premier Yearling Sales by Paul Moroney Bloodstock for a modest $45,000 from the draft of Blandford Lodge.
