Melbourne Cup Day

Our Melbourne Cup Day starts early with a runner in the first race at 10.20 - the promising two-year-old Across The Moon contesting the AGL Energy Stakes.
An $80,000 Magic Millions daughter of Stratum, the 3/4 sister to the classy Melito has pleased us with her progress so far and it is worth noting that the stable won this race a few years ago with subsequent Blue Diamond winner True Jewels.
"She is a nice, sensible filly who has done everything right," Moroney said - pointing out that she has proven competitive in each of her jump outs. "She won't be far away," he added.
Linton Street is second emergency in the 'other staying race,' the Lavazza over 2800m. Only lightly raced, he has been showing longer distance potential and he did not have a lot of luck when going close at Sale last start.
Tough mare Tootsie has unfortunately continued her run of outside barrier draws but she just keeps racing well and this the Listed Herald Sun Stakes is a bit easier than the Group races she has been contesting.
Faring even worse in the barrier draw is Stormy Hussey who takes her place in the Listed 1400m event for three-year-old fillies. She is only just out of maiden class but those who saw her win that race at Bendigo will have been impressed with her fast finishing style.
Unfortunately we don't have a Melbourne Cup runner this year (but let's hope Monaco Consul is flying our flag this time in 12 months!) but we have one of our favourite horses Mission Critical contesting the race after it, the Listed Johnnie Walker Stakes.
His career has not been a lucky one with various set backs and injuries but he is not far off being 100%.
"We have nearly lost him on a few occasions," Moroney explained, "but he is pretty close to being right again. On his day he is a very good horse."
Syndrome has got a run as third emergency in the final event of the day, the TAB Big 6 and we are thrilled that he has as his latest win at Bendigo was full of merit.
"He is one of our more promising horses," Moroney said, "and he is a definite lightweight chance."
And so a busy Melbourne Cup Day - best wishes to everyone on our sport's day of days!
