Midweek At Sandown

Ballymore heads to Sandown’s midweek meeting with a nice team of horses and we have our fingers crossed for a winner or two – or maybe more!

Kicking off our busy day is debutant Archery Miss in the opening event, the Polytrack Plate over 1200m.

To be ridden by Jake Noonan, the attractive daughter of Red Arrow has shaped well at home although she will, Michael Moroney says “improve on whatever she shows at her first start.”

Describing Archery Miss as “a nice big filly,” Moroney said that her jump-outs had been “quite good.”

In the following race, the Betty McDowell Elsternwick Plate, we will be cheering on the promising Yesterday’s Song who ran so very well at debut.

Getting back off a tardy start in an 1100m event at Bendigo, the son of Henrythenavigator really caught the eye in the run home – charging home late after hooking out wide at the turn.

Suited up to 1300m on Wednesday, the three-year-old will be partnered by Michael Rodd.

“He was impressive first up,” Moroney enthused, “and he should prove hard to beat.”

Sunset Magic takes her place in the third race, the Guinot Skincare Plate with Glen Boss to take the ride.

Being a daughter of Zabeel she is bound to be suited up to 2400m and her latest consistent form over slightly shorter trips reads well.

“She has trained on well,” said Moroney – “we can’t fault her.”

“We will continue on with her until she throws in a bad one but at the moment she seems be thriving on racing.”

Zazparella races in the next event, the Deadly Design Plate and she too should be suited by a slight rise in distance.

Too strong at Mornington last time out, the daughter of in-form stallion Al Maher is racing more tractably now that the blinkers have come off.

“She looks as though she will stay now,” Moroney reported.

“This looks a competitive race but it is a nice stepping stone for her.”

Impressive debut winner Slinky Veeness (pictured) is our final runner for the day, looking a top chance in the MiStable Handicap.

Saluting by an easy 4¼ lengths at Cranbourne late last month, the Guillotine filly has pleased us since.

“She is still a bit raw, still a bit green,” Moroney said.

“She strikes a reasonable sort of field but she could easily go right on with it.”

Thursday is a quieter day for Ballymore with just one runner at Seymour – The Bunsta lining up in the Hollylodge Thoroughbreds Maiden Plate.

Showing ability in New Zealand, the lightly raced three-year-old has performed “really well” in a local jump-out.

“For a Pentire he shows a bit of speed,” Moroney said of the gelding who kicks off his Australian career over 1209m with Jake Noonan aboard.
