Surpass Tasmania bound

As we look forward to contesting Sunday's Group 3 Hobart Cup with Surpass (pictured), we will also be cheering on some nice chances at the Caulfield mid-week meeting.

Kicking off our busy day is Sunset Magic who takes her place in the second event, the Salt & Pepper Plate with Craig Newitt to take the ride.

A well related mare by Zabeel, she has been in consistent form of late and although she "strikes a pretty strong field" according to Michael Moroney, she is nicely primed after her game last start second at Kilmore.

"She has a couple of gear changes (blinkers, tongue tie) which we think will improve her," he said, adding that she is "definitely a chance."

The Importer Handicap, the fourth race on the card, will be contested by Miz Sinatra with champion jockey Glen Boss aboard.

She has run nicely at both outings this campaign and strips fitter for them.

"We are very happy with her," Moroney reported, describing the five-year-old Duelled mare as "a real light-weight chance."

"We are aware that she is running out of her grade a bit but she comes in well with the weight relief and a nice draw (barrier 3)."

Hopefully we will be cheering home a running double with Space racing in the following event, the Biretta & Busby Hatmaker Co. Handicap.

A sound fourth when resuming at Echuca, the Dubai Destination gelding strips fitter and has drawn nicely in barrier one for Damian Lane.

"His first up run was good enough and we have the blinkers on which we think will help him," Moroney said, noting that "he wanted to lay out a little bit last time."

"He is a horse who could improve pretty quickly," he said of the lightly raced gelding who has won two of only seven starts.

The Schweppes Handicap sees our final of four Caulfield runners in Mrs Hadlee who looks ready to run her usual honest race.

To be ridden by Craig Newitt, the four-year-old has been terrific in the placings at both runs this time in and will be better for them.

"She strikes a pretty strong field but she is consistent and always hard to beat in mare's company."

On Thursday we head to Geelong with Oneman Wolfpack who will take his place in the Emsley Lodge Showcase Tour of Victoria BM70 Handicap.

Topweight of 61kg with Jordan Childs aboard, the Iglesia gelding has not raced since last winter but has been pleasing us in his work.

"He is a quality horse," Moroney said, "and it would not surprise us if he ran well fresh - he is a place chance at good odds."
