A Poetic Performance by Milkwood

It did not take long for promising three-year-old Milkwood to make her mark in Australia, the attractive chestnut at only her second local outing racing away to an easy win at Sale on Sunday.

Striking going that was too firm for her at Echuca last month, Milkwood relished Sale's heavy conditions and she was always travelling well back on the rails for Jason Lyon.

Held up approaching and rounding the turn, Milkwood was in a bit of trouble as others made their runs before her but once clear she really found the line well - hitting the lead with 100m to go and drawing clear to win by a soft 1¼ lengths.

The win was her second from just eight starts, Milkwood always displaying potential in New Zealand and having been so impressive here she looks up to bigger and better things.

A cleverly named daughter of Danehill's star Dylan Thomas (Under Milk Wood a famed radio play by poet Dylan Thomas), Milkwood was a $55,000 purchase for Paul Moroney at the 2011 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Bred by M & R Services, she is a half-sister to four winners including the dam of the US stakes winner Cotuea Kitten. Her dam, the imported Pleasant Colony mare Goodeve, is a half-sister to the Canadian Group One winner All An Angel and a daughter of the Group One mare Ruling Angel.

This is one of Canada's finest families, its other members including the big race winners Tilt My Halo, Regal Intention, Tiffany's Secret and Soaring Free.
