Kidwelly contests the Sir Tristram

The New Zealand Summer Carnival is in full swing and we are looking forward to saddling up Kidwelly in one of Saturday's features, the Group 2 Sir Tristram Fillies Classic at Te Rapa.

Close up when dropping back to 1600m last start, the daughter of Dylan Thomas was previously a game second to Fix over 2000m - the distance of Saturday's contest.

"She should prove very competitive from the good barrier draw (4)," Chad Ormsby said, adding that she is "out to get her revenge on Fix!"

Less than an hour after Kidwelly's race we will be cheering on Kaptain Kirkup at the Awapuni meeting, the six-year-old having his third run for the campaign.

Striking a small field in the Pohangina Cup over 1400m, he has finished close up at both runs this time in and he strips fitter for them.

"He looks to be well placed from the draw (4) from which he should be able to dictate terms," said Ormsby.

A five times winner raced by Paul Moroney, Kaptain Kirkup is by Captain Rio with whose daughter Brazilian Pulse we won the VRC Oaks.

It is a relatively quiet weekend for Ballymore with just one other runner - Thats How We Roll contesting a 1600m maiden at Pukekohe Park on Sunday.

"He has improved a lot since his debut run," Ormsby noted, "and he is not without some chance if he got a bit of luck in running."
