Ballymore's record with the Pentire breed - highlighted by the four Gr.1 wins for the high class Xcellent (pictured) - has been outstanding and the stable cheered home another winner by this terrific stallion at Thames on Wednesday.

Appreciating a step up to 2000m at his fourth run this preparation, Upstream Lad impressed breaking his maiden by a soft 2 3/4 lengths.

Settling last from the outside gate for Jason Waddell , the lightly raced five-year-old made an early run to sweep to the lead at the 400m - drawing clear and proving a class above his rivals.

Raced by A Byrne, A S Byron, A D Dawson, I E McCarrison, Mrs S M Reeve, A R & J D Williams, Upstream Lad caught Paul's eye at the 2009 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale where he was secured for a bid of NZ$50,000.

Bred on the same Pentire/Mr Prospector cross as the dual Gr.1 winner Zarita and the same Pentire/Star Kingdom cross as the big race winners Rangirangdoo, Pantani and Penny Gem, Upstream Lad is out of a daughter of the terrific broodmare Lilting Star.

A half-sister to the Gr.1 winning juvenile Parade, Lilting Star produced six winners including the Gr.1 winner Armstrong and the Gr.3 winners Spiritual Star and Star On Ice (in turn dam of the Listed winner Three Chimneys).
