Midweek Action At Mornington

Having her first run since early July, performing well at the Flemington jump-outs since, Pacific Cross (pictured, courtesy of Racing Photos) mixed her form a little last time in but was striking rain affected tracks; her preference seeming to be for the firmer going.

"That's why we have her up at this time of year," Michael Moroney explained, noting that the well related Merchant Navy mare (from the family of Shamexpress whose son Ka Ying Rising won the big sprint in Hong Kong on the weekend) has "developed into a really lovely mare."

Impressive when she overcame trouble in running to win at her Pakenham debut in October last year, Pacific Cross did not always have the best of luck at subsequent outings and we hope to see her back in the winner's circle soon.

"She is forward enough to do something," Moroney said.

Cavalry Man is another who will always be happy for the rain to stay away, the four-year-old all at sea when striking heavy going a Kilmore late last month.

Favourite on that occasion, Cavalry Man was not happy as soon as the pressure went on and whilst such runs can sometimes take a bit out of a horse, jockey Jye McNeil looked after him - "he sat up on him as soon as he realised he wasn't handling it," Moroney said.

"We expect him to run a better race," he continued, noting that Cavalry Man had done a good job winning his previous start at Kyneton. Declan Bates was aboard that day and again takes the ride, also partnering with Pacific Cross.
