Toronto Terrier gained a well deserved second win at Sandown on Saturday.

Starting equal-favourite after two strong performances in valuable races, Toronto Terrier enjoyed the perfect ride from Jye McNeil, racing close to the lead in the Vale Laurie Larmer OAM three-year-old Handicap over 1400 metres, eased into the lead early in the long home straight on the Hillside course before staying on strongly to comfortably hold out the other equal favourite Deekay to score by three-quarters of a length.

Mike Moroney said the Toronado half-brother to VRC Derby winner Extra Brut was not winning out of turn.

“He certainly deserved that, he’s always shown us above average ability but we took the decision to geld him after last spring,” Mike said.

“Gelding has been the making of him, he has not performed poorly in the four starts since and I’d like to think there is still some improvement there.

“He was coming back from 1600 to 1400 metres today but the stiff uphill finish evened things out and I thought he did it with a bit in hand.

“We’ll let the dust settle before making any plans but he’s in good form and there is plenty of prize-money to be won so we will go through the calendar and work out a plan.”
