FIVE STAKES RACES AT CAULFIELD SATURDAY

The stable is busy on Saturday with five runners in stakes races, headed by the high-class stayer Sound bidding for back-to-back wins in the Zipping Classic.

The Zipping Classic over 2400m was the last win for Sound and Mike Moroney believes the stallion can double up.

“It’s arguably a stronger race this year but I’m happy with our horse,” Mike said.

“He’s working well and looks terrific, it would be lovely to see him win it again and we go into the race with a fit and healthy horse and I’m sure he will run well.”

The progressive General Firepower runs in the Sandown Guineas over 1600 metres with Jye McNeil aboard.

“It’s a jump up in class obviously but we don’t get too many opportunities to run in a Group 2 race where the highest-rated horse is on 80,” Mike said.

“The wide draw will probably dictate for us to settle midfield, especially if the speed is on.

“Of course he will need luck and he still has some work to do on his race smarts but I certainly feel it is worth trying him at this level and find out where he sits in the pecking order.”

Hang Man is ready to improve in the Eclipse Stakes at his third start this preparation.

“His gallop on Tuesday was terrific and even though this does look a strong race I do think he’s there to run a big race,” Mike said.

“The speed map looks to suit and the firm track is what he’s after so even though he’s one of the outsiders I do think he will be hard to beat.”

Dragon Storm and Lady In The Sky both run in the Sandown Cup over 3200 metres with Zac Spain aboard Lady In The Sky.

“She goes around on the minimum but so is the majority of the field so she’s not necessarily suited,” Mike said.

“I think she will be suited by the distance and she’s in form so she’ll run well and if she can sneak into the placings obviously it enhances her value being a daughter of Savabeel.”

Blaike McDougall is aboard the New Zealand Cup winner Dragon Storm.

“He’s proven at the distance which is a positive and from the outside barrier I’d say he will need to go back from the start,” Mike said.

“I’ve replaced the blinkers with a shadow roll and popped him over the logs during the week.

“He’s eating well and looks well so I’m hoping he can turn things around today.”
