Nerve Not Verve and Aktau represent us at Moonee Valley today.

Nerve Not Verve (pictured) is the first to run in race five, the benchmark 78 handicap over 2500m with Damien Oliver aboard and now jumping from barrier 11 following scratchings.

Mike Moroney has a concern after studying the speed map.

“Having looked at the opposition there does look to be a bit of early speed in it which is not helpful as she is better being ridden on speed and today she is one from the outside in the draw,” Moroney said.

“Against that we’ve got Damien Oliver to sort things out and I do think the step up in trip will suit her.

“It’s a race with several chances but with ordinary luck I’m expecting her to run well.”

Aktau is in race seven, the open handicap over 2040m with Jordan Childs in the saddle from barrier seven in the field of 10.

It is the second start this preparation for the import and Moroney is pleased with the progress Aktau is making.

“I’m happy with the way he is progressing, he looks a lot better in the coat and has taken good improvement from his first-up run,” Moroney said.

“The draw may mean he has to go back which will make things a bit awkward, ideally I’d like to see him settle midfield and then give him a chance to run on.

“He’s progressing nicely and I do think today we will see a better performance to set him up for the spring.”
