CHAPADA CUP HUNTING AT MORNINGTON

Chapada and The Commoner are our Saturday runners when they travel to Mornington with Chapada in the feature race.

Chapada (pictured) is in race seven, the $350,000 Mornington Cup over 2400m with Daniel Stackhouse aboard and jumping from barrier eight.

The five-year-old ran a terrific race to finish third in the Australian Cup last start and Mike Moroney says has improved again since.

“I could not be happier with him - he looks a bit burly but that’s just him now he has fully matured,” Moroney said.

“His gallop on Tuesday was as good as I have seen him work and the main thing today will be to get the right run around a track like Mornington.

“The real prize is gaining Caulfield Cup qualification but he’s as well as we can get him and if he gets ordinary luck I think he can win.”

The Commoner runs in race five, the benchmark78 handicap over 1000m with Harry Grace aboard from barrier nine.

The Commoner has placed at her last two starts and Mike is anticipating another solid run today in what looks a competitive race.


“She has raced well for us the two starts she has had placing at Moonee Valley and Echuca, not being beaten all that far in both of them,” Moroney said.

“She’s done well at home and I’m happy with her - there does look a lot of speed in the race so ideally she can find a spot just off them and then finish off but she is going to need some luck from the draw.

“If she can get that then she is an each-way chance in what looks an even affair.”
