SIMPKIN DEBUTS AT SANDOWN TODAY

Two runners for us on Wednesday at the Sandown twilight meeting with Simpkin and Thunder Peak at the races.

Simpkin makes his debut in race two, the Maiden Plate for three-year-olds over 1300m with Mark Zahra in the saddle and drawn barrier three in the eight-horse field.

The son of Toronado has shown Mike Moroney good ability in jumpouts at Flemington.

“He’s coming into this off the back of some nice jumpouts and I’m happy with him,” Moroney said.

“It looks a nice race to get him started with the VOBIS bonuses on a nice track which should suit him.

“I know he’s got nice ability but he’s still a work in progress physically and mentally so whatever he shows us today I’m sure he will improve on but am expecting him to run well.”

Thunder Peak (pictured) is in race seven, the benchmark 64 handicap for three-year-old fillies and to be ridden by Jamie Kah.

“She’s had a freshen up and I’ve added blinkers to sharpen her,” Moroney said.

“The barrier is the awkward part - seven in a field of 10 - as there does look a bit of speed in the race but I do think she is well suited here.

“If the blinkers do focus her and add a couple of lengths to her then I’d say she’s a real winning chance.”
