Viking Hero & Tinseltown contest Caloundra Cup

AAP: Mike Moroney will remove blinkers from Viking Hero in a bid to help boost his chances of a quinella in the Listed Caloundra Cup on Saturday.

It hasn't quite been the gold rush Moroney had hoped for at this year's winter carnival but he's confident of claiming Saturday's 2400-metre feature.

Moroney will saddle up Viking Hero, a Chris Munce mount, and last year's Caloundra Cup runner-up Tinseltown who will be ridden by Chad Ormsby.

Moroney favours seven-year-old Tinseltown over Viking Hero who is backing up after wearing blinkers when fourth to Ironstein in last week's Group Three Tattersall's Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm.

"Viking Hero got a gorgeous run in the Tatt's Cup but overall was slightly disappointing," Moroney said.

"He got beaten a fair margin and I was disappointed he couldn't run past Little Stranger who he stalked throughout the race.

"I'm going to remove the blinkers on him this time hoping it'll improve his attitude but I'd say he'll be going for a spell no matter where he runs."

Moroney is following the same program as last year with Tinseltown who was second to Ironstein in the Caloundra Cup.

Prior to his Caloundra Cup effort, Tinseltown ran sixth in the Group Three Premier's Cup (2200m) at Doomben and ninth in the Group Two Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm.

Moroney feels Tinseltown is in similar form this year after being runner-up to Shuffle The Cash in last month's Premier's Cup and sixth to Tullamore in the Brisbane Cup on June 11.

"He's in similar form to last year when I thought he was unlucky not to win the Caloundra Cup," Moroney said.

"Damien Oliver rode him last year but he was caught wide on him throughout."

Moroney is mystified with Tinseltown's 57 kilograms in the Caloundra Cup, a one kilogram rise on the weight he carried last year.

"It's a disappointing weight really," Moroney said.

"He's won only one race in 12 months and that was at Pukekohe."

Tinseltown came to Brisbane for the winter after falling in the Group One Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick in April.

"He copped a bit of bruising from the fall but other than that he came out of it okay," he said.

"I'm happy with his form up here. He hit the line well when second in the Premier's Cup and he got into a skirmish and was caught three wide in the Brisbane Cup.

"He's the best of my two chances and at this stage he'll back up in the Queensland Cup next week."
