DESERVED WIN FOR METEOR LIGHT

Things worked out well for Meteor Light to win at Sandown on Wednesday.

Michael Poy was positive and found the lead turnout out of the home straight the first time and was then able to set moderate sectionals.

Poy upped the tempo into the home straight and Meteor Light went clear, getting tired over the concluding stages but holding on to win the Benchmark 78 Handicap (2400m) by a diminishing nose.

Meteor Light had been narrowly beaten at Sandown at his previous start and Mike Moroney said the import deserved a win.

“I thought it was a brave win - he had to do a bit of work to get the lead and was then able to settle into a rhythm,” Moroney said.

“They came at him early - it was a slender margin but he deserved it,

“He loves the wet conditions and he’s a sound horse, goes for apprentices and senior riders so if we can get similar conditions then I’m sure he’ll be winning again.

“We’ll see how he comes out of it and go through the calendar to see where he can go next.”

Meteor Light was purchased as a yearling in England by Paul Moroney for £26,000, today his second Australian win for the stable at Sandown.
