FEATURE RACE RUNNERS AT WARRNAMBOOL

Five runners for us on the final day of Warrnambool with chances in the feature races.

Mirimar is our runner in the Warrnambool Cup (2350m), to be ridden by Dwayne Dunn. Mirimar won at Caulfield two starts back and Mike Moroney said a repeat of that effort will be necessary today.

“The track is soft and he’ll be able to get his toe in which will suit him,” Moroney said.

“He’s drawn ideally in barrier one to get a nice cosy run and this is the race we’ve set him for. He beat the favourite at Flemington and with conditions to suit today I think he’s going to run well.”

The three-year-old ran well last start to finish fourth in the Arrowfield Sprint (Gr 2) on a heavy track.

“He’s come back from Sydney in good order but he hasn’t had much luck with a wide draw,” Moroney said.

“That said he is normally a quick beginner so he should be able to get across into a nice spot.

“His last piece of work here was good and although he has a few things against him what looks a typically competitive Wangoom is he brings his best I’m expecting him to be hard to beat.”

Mr Marathon Man ran in this race last year and will be second-up here after resuming with a solid sixth over 1200m at Caulfield last month.

“I’d have liked to see the track a bit softer than it is and the race 1400m but it is what it is,” Moroney said.

“We’ve taken the norton bit off him and put the crossover on him - he has worked in that and seemed to be a bit better plus we’ve added a one-eyed blinker to try and keep him straight.

“He’s got the ability to win a race like this but he needs a couple of things to go his way.”

Last start winner Whittington Stone runs in race five, the 3YO benchmark 70 handicap over 1400m with Jake Noonan again in the saddle.

“He’s done well since and has drawn nicely in barrier two,” Moroney said.

“He’s getting into the prep but is still eating well and holding his condition. From the draw he should get the right run and I think he’s a great chance again.”

Pedro Ximenez rounds out the day in race nine, the benchmark 78 handicap over 2350m with Michael Dee aboard.

“He’s second-up and has improved a lot from his first-up run,” Moroney said.

“It looks an even sort of race but our horse is on the way up and provided the track is still soft by the end of the day then I’m expecting a good performance.”
