WINNING CHANCES AT FLEMINGTON ON WEDNESDAY

Two nice chances for us on Wednesday to mark the 180th anniversary of the first meeting at Flemington.

Last start winner Wham (pictured) goes in race six, the benchmark 78 handicap over 1400m with Jordan Childs again in the saddle, to jump from barrier five in a field of 10.

Blinkers certainly focussed the son of Fiorente to a clear win at Sandown last time out and Mike Moroney is expecting another forward showing.

“He has always shown us good ability but the blinkers certainly switched him on last start,” Moroney said.

“He’s trained on nicely, has kept on improving and the scratchings will help in so far as avoiding traffic in the home straight.

“He’s only gone up half a kilo so I’m expecting him to run well again in what looks strong sort of race with some Saturday class horses in it.”

Mirimar has his second start this preparation in the next race, the Benchmark 78 handicap over 2000m with Michael Poy helping to reduce the weight to 59 kg.

“We expected a good run first-up and he didn’t disappoint with second at Moonee Valley over 1600m,” Moroney said.

“He has the slight step up in trip here and has come on since. He’s drawn wide out in barrier 11 but if we did get some of the forecast rain then that will enhance his chances.

“He’s won second-up before and with ordinary luck I think he can be in the finish.”
