FEATURE RACE ACTION FOR US AT CAULFIELD

Runners at Caulfield and Kyneton for us on Saturday including Alburq in the feature Manfred Stakes at Caulfield.

Alburq is in race seven, the Group 3 Manfred Stakes over 1200m with Michael Dee to ride and drawn barrier five after scratchings.

Alburq finished fourth over 1400m at Flemington last time out and while this represents a rise in class Mike Moroney is confident the son of Rubick will be competitive.

“We realise this is a steep rise in class and although it’s a small field it does look a hot race,” Moroney said.

“That said Super Seth and Dalasan are both first-up and our colt is fully fit. He has done well since his last start and will start one of the outsiders but I’m sure he will acquit himself well.”

Aktau (pictured) is our other Caulfield runner in race six, the Benchmark 84 Handicap over 1800m with Jye McNeil to ride again.

The import impressed on his Australian debut with a strong win at Flemington over 1600m on December 21 and Moroney is expecting another forward showing today.

“We gave him a little freshen up after his excellent win and I can’t fault him,” Moroney said. “He had a soft jumpout last Friday just to stimulate him and he has come though that in terrific order.

“It’s only a small field so it may turn into a tactical affair and the other import Just Benjamin looks the main danger however, I am extremely happy with Aktau and think he will prove hard to beat.”

Pedro Ximenez heads to Kyneton to run in race, the Woodend Cup over 1850m with Dylan Dunn in the saddle.

It is the second start this preparation for Pedro Ximenez who resumed at Flemington over 1600m on January 1.

“He just got run off his legs first-up but he’s fitter now and will appreciate the extra distance today,” Moroney said. “His work has been good and if the forecast rain arrives before his race that will also improve his chances.

“I’m expecting him to be finishing off late and a placing wouldn't surprise in the small field.”
