MELBOURNE AND SYDNEY RUNNERS ON GUINEAS DAY

Runners in Melbourne and Sydney for us on Caulfield Guineas day with Hang Man and Tofane at Caulfield and Buffalo River at Randwick.

Hang Man (pictured) runs in race five at Caulfield. the $400,000 Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2) over 2400m with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle.

The import impressed winning the Benalla Gold Cup last time out and has pleased Mike Moroney since.

“He’s drawn out a little bit in barrier 10 which will make it a bit tougher as he’s a horse who does seem to like a bit of cover but I’m sure Kerrin will sort that out,” Moroney said.

“There are a lot of different form lines in the race with some of the internationals but our horse has always promised to be up to this level and his last start win was terrific under the circumstances.

“He looks particularly well and his work on Tuesday was excellent so withordinary luck then I expect him to be in the finish.”

Tofane runs in race four, the Northwood Plume Stakes (Gr 3) over 1200m where she will jump from barrier five with Dwayne Dunn in the saddle.

“She’s had a nice little freshen from her last start where she came out of the race with a foot abscess and Dwayne has ridden her before,” Moroney said.

“She has struck what looks a strong renewal of this mares race but she’s going well, she worked nicely on Tuesday and as I say, she has freshened up nicely.

“In theory the 1200 metres should be a bit short for her but she’s got a good record at the trip and she should be able to settle just behind the speed and if she finds her best form then she’s good enough to win it I think.”

Buffalo River resumes in race eight at Randwick, the $500,000 Silver Eagle over 1300m with Martin Harley to ride and drawen barrier six.

It is the first start this preparation for the import, who won all three of his races in his first Australian preparation.

“He’s travelled up and settled in well,” Moroney said. “He’s drawn well and we’ve got a good rider. It’s a deep race compared to our horse coming off Benchmark winter races so it will be interesting to see how he measures up.

“He’ll likely go forward - he has to finish in the first three to qualify for the Golden Eagle which is the aim and he’s done a lot of right-handed work so he’s there to be competitive.”
