DERBY DAY AND WE HAVE TWO WINNING CHANCES

It’s Australian Derby day at Randwick and we have two strong chances in the race with Chapada and Arrogant.

The pair placed behind The Autumn Sun in the Rosehill Guineas at their last start and the jockeys stay the same, Craig Williams aboard Arrogant and Damien Oliver on Chapada.

Mike Moroney is pleased with the progress of the pair since.

“I can’t fault Chapada,” Moroney said. “He looks terrific, he’s eaten everything and tightened up that little bit.

“The main thing with him will be some luck - he’s been luckless in two Group Is now and hopefully it will be third time lucky here.

“If I’m honest I think the stablemate will be the hardest to beat but I’m very happy with him and just want ordinary luck in running with him.”

Arrogant (pictured) has been up a little while but Moroney is delighted with his condition.

“He’s bright and happy and has settled into his new environment comfortably,” Moroney said.

“He worked a lot better without the ear muffs on Thursday and the wet track will not worry him.

“We know he’ll get the trip which is another thing in his favour and with him racing forward it usually takes luck out of the equation.”

Vengeur Masque is our other runner in race five, the Group III Chairman’s Quality over 2600m with Patrick Moloney to ride from the outside barrier.

The seven-year-old ran an excellent race last start when fifth in the Auckland Cup at Ellerslie despite the heavy track.

“The track is likely to be soft which is not his ideal but I want to give him this run to go into the Sydney Cup,” Moroney said.

“I must say he looks terrific, probably the best I’ve seen him and it’s just a pity that the rain is following him.”
