WINNING CHANCES ON SUPER SATURDAY

Three runners at our home track on Super Saturday.

Hang Man is the first to go in race three, the Furphy Benchmark 90 Handicap over 200m with Damien Oliver aboard, Hawker Hurricane is in race five, the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2) over 1400m with Mark Zahra riding and Sound resumes in the Australian Cup (Gr 1) over 2000m.

It is the fourth run this preparation for Hang Man, who finds himself on the minimum of 54kg.

“It’s a step up in class for him,” Mike Moroney said. ‘We’ve always thought he was up to this level and this is a good chance to test him.

“He was a little bit disappointing on face value last start when he finished sixth at Flemington but it was a slowly run race early that developed into a sprint home.

“There should be a good even speed in this race and I do think he will run a better race after a quiet week at home.”

Hawker Hurricane (pictured) has drawn the outside at the 1400m start in the Sires’ Produce Stakes and is looking to bounce back after a disappointing effort in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1).

“I don’t think the draw will really affect him as he doesn’t have a huge amount of gate speed and will likely go back - the main thing will be as long as it is truly run,” Moroney said.

“He’s really well, his work on Tuesday was terrific and he’s feeling very well in himself.

“We can’t fault him and I do think he is a good winning chance.”

Sound is in race eight, the Australian Cup in his first start since the spring when the German import ran in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

“It’s a good starting point for him,” Moroney said. “He’s a clean winded horse and this race should top him off nicely for what we’ve got planned for him in Sydney.

“His jumpouts have been good and now he’s had time to acclimatise it will be interesting to see how he shapes up in what looks a strong race.”
