HAWKER HURRICANE SWOOPS TO VICTORY ON DEBUT

Saturday’s $200,000 Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic proved a triumph for Ballymore Stables with our two runners finishing first and third.

Both Alburq and Hawker Hurricane were on debut and it was Alburq which found his stride early to lead with Hawker Hurricane settled towards the rear ridden by Mark Zahra.

Alburq led into the home straight and gave a kick before Hawker Hurricane (pictured) quickened well to overhaul his stablemate late to score by three-quarters of a length over Charvet, who made ground to grab second ahead of Alburq.

The pair were the first two-year-old starters this season for the stable and Mike Moroney was delighted with both colts.

“I thought it was a great win,” Moroney said. “He jumped away ok but then didn’t have enough pace to hold his spot.

“I loved the way he took gaps like a real professional and went straight as a die.

“I thought it was the effort of a good horse and I feel he will be better when he gets to 1200m and further - he’s a really exciting horse.”

Mark Zahra said he was impressed by Hawker Hurricane.

"After a bit of bother early I managed to get into a nice spot and in this sort of race if you have a horse who can quicken underneath you it gets you out of trouble, which is what he was able to do,” Zahra said.

"He's a nice horse and will improve a lot. He doesn't know what he's doing yet.

"He's going to be a really nice horse in the autumn.”

Moroney was equally excited about the effort of Alburq, a son of Rubick.

“He went terrific, showed good gate speed and was only run down late,” Moroney said.

“Jordan (Childs) said he just peaked late so he should take good improvement from the run.”

A first-crop son of Deep Field, Hawker Hurricane was selected by Paul Moroney as a yearling for $150,000 from the draft of Widden Stud.
