Williams - Monaco Consul ready to go for Turnbull

Top jockey Craig Williams says Monaco Consul is “spot-on” for Sunday’s Group I Turnbull Stakes at Flemington after a strong track gallop at Caulfield.

Monaco Consul looked a picture before he had the better of VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume in an exhibition gallop between races at Sunday’s meeting.

Monaco Consul has not won a race since his gusty win in the 2009 Victoria Derby but Williams said the son of High Chaparral is ready to produce a big performance on his home track on Sunday.

“It was very good work,” Williams said. “He has always looked good. His run at Flemington in the Makybe Diva Stakes was very good but he got interfered with.

“Mike (Moroney) did the right thing and waited two weeks to get him back to Flemington where he will get a lot more room.”

Williams said the Caulfield track was “definitely dead” and punters should take little notice of the result of the gallop.

“To be fair, Faint Perfume led him up and he had the run behind her,” Williams said. “It was easier for him to sit back off her and run home.

“He looked superior because of the run he had but he is going extremely well and will be very hard to beat in the Turnbull Stakes.”
