Brazilian Pulse - from RVL website

Mike Moroney hopes the recent trend of lightly-raced fillies winning the $500,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas continues at Caulfield on Wednesday.
Moroney will saddle up emerging star Brazilian Pulse in the Group 1 and the New Zealand-bred daughter of Captain Rio will become the modern era's most inexperienced winner of the 1600-metre feature if successful.
Irish Lights last year claimed the mantle as the most lightly-raced recent Thousand Guineas winner when she won at just her fifth start, while the previous two winners – Gallica and Serious Speed – both tackled the Guineas at just their sixth outing.
Brazilian Pulse, who was unraced at two, will better them all if she wins the Guineas, but it is an assignment Moroney has always had in mind for her.
“She barrier trialled once in New Zealand and had a couple of local jumpouts at Matamata and always told me that she had ability, so we brought her over here,” Moroney said.
“There probably haven't been many (Guineas winners) that have been unraced at two, she wasn't raced, but she's a pretty sensible filly and that's helped to get her through.”
While Brazilian Pulse lacks the experience of rivals including More Strawberries, Sistine Angel, Divorces and Yosei, she brings the proven formline into the Thousand Guineas.
After victory in modest events at Ballarat and Betfair Park, she stormed into Guineas calculations with a narrow Edward Manifold Stakes second to Sistine Angel when forced to travel wide around the home turn.
Five of the past seven Guineas winners have run first or second in the Manifold at their previous run and Moroney said she would be better for having had a run at mile.
“She's in her first preparation, but each run she's got more professional,” he said.
“She did a bit wrong at Flemington. When she got to the front she probably arrived there a bit soon, but her run had a lot of merit and I thought if she'd had an easier trip in transit and gone straight when she hit the front she probably would have won the race.
“So we're going into this race with a little bit of confidence and just hoping that she can do things right.”
Brazilian Pulse has drawn barrier 12 for the event to be run at 3.40pm and big-race specialist Michael Rodd takes the ride.
Victory would be a welcome fillip for Brazilian Pulse's owner, Rohan Aujard, who saw his promising sprinter King Pulse seriously injured after taking fright at the storms following a super run in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington in March.
“Rohan's a relative newcomer to racing, I think he's only been racing majorly for about the last four years, but he's got a number of horses now and he's really had a bit of a lick at it and has a passion for it, so it would be a great result,” Moroney said.
The Melbourne Cup-winning trainer hopes Schweppes Thousand Guineas day will be the start of a dream few days that could culminate with Monaco Consul winning Saturday's $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup.
The defending AAMI Victoria Derby champion's campaign has been plagued by unsuitable inside draws and Moroney suggest the forecast showers wouldn't hurt his chances if they do arrive.
“He won the Derby on top of the ground, but then he won the Spring Champion Stakes in wet ground, so he's won on both,” Moroney said. “A wet track will put a few out (of contention), but it won't be putting him out.
“We're just hoping that we draw out a fraction. He's just been hindered by the number one draw – he's had it three times now – and it just hasn't been quite where he wants to be.”
Moroney will know where the four-year-old's BMW Caulfield Cup quest will start from just after 11am on Wednesday, when the barrier draw takes place at Caulfield.
