Araldo Junior to resume in Cranbourne Cup

He's a stable favourite, who so far hasn't lived up to his staying potential.

But Mike Moroney thinks we might just see the best of Araldo Junior this year, and it all starts in Friday night's $150,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup.

Injuries have kept the six year-old out of racing since July last year, when he finished behind Au Revoir and Black Tomahawk over 2500m at Flemington.

"He just suffered from a lot of feet trouble last time in, but we seem to have the better of that now," Moroney said.

Moroney admits the 1600m at Cranbourne on Friday night might be a bit short for his German import, but he thinks it's a nice starting point for what could be his most important campaign.

"He is an out-and-out stayer but as you know the stayers can run cheeky races first-up and we're really happy with him," Moroney said.

"He's just a lovely horse to be around and it will be interesting to see because I think he'll be at his best this campaign."

Following on from the Cranbourne Cup, Moroney said it's a campaign that could include a run in the Warrnambool Cup before being set for the spring.

"He's still a lightly-raced stayer and he's always looked like he wanted to get the two mile, so some stage we've got to try him at that," he said.
