Brazilian Pulse ready for Oaks

By Robert Windmill MELBOURNE, Nov 3 AAP
Mike Moroney has won three Oaks and Brazilian Pulse looks the goods to give him his first at Flemington.

For the second time Moroney will saddle up a VRC Oaks favourite but he has good reason to be more confident on Thursday than 23 years ago when Concordance tried to lead all the way and finished seventh at her Australian race debut.

Unlike Concordance, Brazilian Pulse has had a traditional Oaks lead-up through the Edward Manifold, Thousand Guineas and the Wakeful Stakes, a race program that has delivered five of the last nine Oaks winners.

Exceptions were Bulla Borghese who missed the Manifold, Miss Finland and Samantha Miss who both contested the Cox Plate, and Arapaho Miss whose Oaks lead-up was a Caulfield 2000-metre event.

Moroney said Brazilian Pulse was a delight to train and he has complete faith in her ability, and with good cause.

Still in her first race campaign, she was second to Sistine Angel, a brave third to Oaks rivals Yosei and Heartsareforlove in the Thousand Guineas and impressive when winning the Wakeful after racing wide most of the way.

"She is such a relaxed filly, a lovely filly to train," Moroney said.

"Everyone who has ridden her on race day can't believe how good she does to switch off and on when you want her to do so.

"That takes them a long way (in an Oaks) and this is definitely one that I would like to win."

Moroney first enjoyed Oaks success when he travelled Our Heavenly Body from New Zealand to land the 1989 SA Oaks before Alacrity and The Lions Roar ran the quinella for him in the 1996 NZ Oaks.

Most recently he trained Eskimo Queen to win the 2007 Queensland Oaks.
TAB Sportsbet has Brazilian Pulse favourite at $3.20 to become the 12th Wakeful-Oaks double winner in 26 years.

Only two other Oaks runners are under double-figure odds - Wakeful fifth placegetter Sasa ($4.80) and Precious Lorraine ($6.50) who was a well-beaten fourth against the colts in the AAMI Vase.

Moroney said the 2500m distance was the query for all the fillies in the Oaks but he was more worried about the track condition for Brazilian Pulse.

He said he doubted that she handled the slow conditions in the Thousand Guineas and the track on Thursday was rated a heavy (8).

"Her two best wins have been at Sandown when the track was only dead and in the Wakeful when the track was good," Moroney said.

Brazilian Pulse has a stout female line with her dam Sharazad a winner at 2200m and her grand-dam a dual winner at 2400 metres.
